우리 문화에서 나이는 무척 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 이 또한 유교 문화의 소산으로 서양인들에게는 무척 어색한 문화이다. 우리의 일간지나 잡지를 보면 사람 이름이 나오면 반드시 괄호 속에 나이가 들어가 있는데, 나이가 그다지 중요한 의미를 갖지 못하는 서양인들에게는 이 또한 무척 낯선 느낌을 주는 요소이다.
서양인들은 상대의 나이에 큰 관심이 없다. 또 상대의 나이를 모르는 것이 상대와 관계를 맺는데 장애 요소가 되지 않는다. 오죽하면 그들이 흔히 말하는 말 가운데, "Age is just a number. (나이는 그저 숫자에 불과하죠.)"라는 말까지 있을까? 영어에서 friend의 개념은 "서로 좋아하는 바가 같고, 이해하는 바가 같으며, 관심사를 공유할 수 있는 관계에 있는 사람"으로 정의된다. 여기에는 전혀 나이의 개념은 들어 있지 않다. 선후배를 따지는 것은 우리의 사고 방식에서 비롯된 것이므로 영어에서는 어울리지 않는 개념이다.
